A CampusRN Scholarship Program finalist for the Northeast region:
We always hear the saying that "It takes a village to raise a child" but in my eyes it also takes a village or in today's age, a community to address health care disparities and ensure that the needs of the people are met and that they have access to healthcare and other vital resources to keep them going and lead long, healthy lives. Because of my beliefs of bringing healthcare to as many people as possible through as many avenues as possible, I have been a longtime fan of community health nursing. I would love to complete my bachelor's degree and pursue a career in the field of public health because I know that the satisfaction of reaching out to communities that may otherwise fly under the radar will far outweigh any apprehension I've experienced about not being more traditional and working inside of a hospital.
I am committed to bringing about good nursing care to those who are underserved and/or underrepresented. Growing up as a first generation immigrant, in a family of hard workers I know personally how hard it can be to seek and receive healthcare. A combination of limited resources and limited knowledge of when, where, and how to seek affordable healthcare, and fear of not receiving culturally competent healthcare kept me and my family from receiving the best of care throughout the years and it was not until I began pursuing higher education that I saw the wide world of options available to me. I would like to give others the opportunities to have the necessary screenings, preventative healthcare and the full range of healthcare options that would facilitate them leading a long and health life.
I believe I am qualified for this scholarship because not only do I have a strong academic record, but more importantly because I have the passion and the determination to bring about change in my community. I've made the best decision to pursue higher education and achieve my degree in nursing because not only am I investing in myself and my future, but the future of all those people awaiting my help. Receiving this scholarship would mean that there are others out there who support my dream and recognize the need for passionate nurses and more specifically, community health nurses. Receiving this scholarship would be an honor and it would show me that the community or "village" of nurses are supportive of not only each other, but of the communities of which they serve.
